ABOUT LAFAYETTE

Enrollment is open and we encourage you to apply to Lafayette. Located at 2727 South Carrolton Avenue in New Orleans, Lafayette has an enrollment of 750 children in Pre-K through 7th grades with a maximum of 25 students per class. Enrollment is at capacity with waiting lists for every grade.

Our students suffered significantly in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They were the faces in the Superdome and the convention center. Many of these young people did not attend school in 2005-2006 causing them to fall even more behind academically. They are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm and need ways to overcome their fears and the instability of their post-Katrina lives. Most are still living displaced in trailers or in temporary housing with relatives. Many are testing well below grade level. In addition, over 95% of the students qualify for free lunch and breakfast.

As Mickey Landry, Head of Lafayette Charter Academy said recently to a gathering of new teachers, “Lafayette Charter Academy is a beacon of light for the students who attend school with us. We believe it is our solemn duty to succeed. We must succeed! As educators, we have a chance to build a school that will succeed, and we cannot fail another generation of children. Everyone who works at Lafayette commits to being part of a team that will see to it that the school succeeds. It’s about us, and it’s about our children.”
